My Dog Carrier Backpack Journey

Me walking my puppy in the park.

Getting regular daily exercise is a big part of how I manage my anxiety. A challenge I faced after getting a new puppy was figuring out how to meet my exercise needs while juggling his care. When out walking, Dagr was ready to go home long before I was. It took a toll on me so I was motivated to find a solution.

Why consider a Dog Carrier Backpack?

A dog carrier backpack is great for small dogs and puppies with limited stamina. It lets you take them places unobtrusively and transport them securely, even if they don’t have their basic obedience skills down pat. It’s a fantastic way to socialize your dog and expose them to different environments. They’re also a good option for older pets or animals with physical limitations.

Dog Carrier Backpack Benefits

My dog carrier backpack has made my life so much easier because it has allowed me to do more with Dagr. Here are the key benefits:

  • Socialization Opportunities: Taking your dog out and about in a carrier backpack is convenient and a fantastic way to socialize them to the world around them. Your pup gets to experience new sights, sounds and smells, all while feeling safe and secure by your side.
  • Easy Transportation: Puppies can be a handful, especially when it comes to getting from point A to point B. A dog carrier backpack makes transportation a breeze, whether you’re navigating crowded streets, hiking trails, or public transit.
  • Comfort for Both You and Your Pup: Unlike traditional puppy slings or bulky crates, a well-designed dog carrier backpack distributes weight evenly across your shoulders and back, making it much more comfortable for extended wear. Your pup gets to enjoy a cozy ride with plenty of ventilation and room to stretch out.
  • Bonding Opportunities: Dagr is happiest when he’s close to me. He likes it when I loosen the interior security strap so he can turn and rest his face or paws on my shoulder. He feels secure seeing new things, knowing I am within reach.

Pecute Dog Carrier Backpack: Product I Recommend

I agonized over what pet carrier backpack to purchase. I was looking for something comfortable, well-made, with ventilation. I settled upon the Pecute Dog Carrier Backpack  (affiliate link) from Amazon because of the positive reviews, roomy interior, ventilation and solid-looking construction. It’s honestly a fantastic backpack. I’ve used it to take Dagr grocery shopping, to the mall, to vet appointments, to fairs and outdoor markets, in the car, and on our nature hikes. It attracts a lot of attention and I get asked about it daily.

Pecute Backpack Positives

  • 1. The backpack is well-constructed. The two zippered sides feel reinforced, giving the bag structure.
  • 2. The interior is roomy and has a slightly sloped shape, reducing visual bulk without compromising comfort.
  • 3. It has mesh on the top and sides, allowing for ventilation so your dog stays cooler.
  • 4. I got the model with an expandable compartment at the back, so if we’re parked somewhere, I can create a larger space for Dagr to stretch out in.
  • 5. The bag also has an internal adjustable safety strap that tethers your dog in place.

Pecute Backpack Negatives

  • 1. It is hot in the summer. My back gets sweaty after a long walk.
  • 2. The chest strap placement is odd. If you have a wide chest, you might find the strap placement awkward.
  • 3. The information listed about the weight accommodation is misleading. When I purchased my backpack, the listing said, “up to 18 lbs and under,” the included product photo said 13 lbs, and the ‘About this item’ section said, “7-10 lbs for dogs and 7-12 lbs for cats”. Dagr is close to 10 lbs and I don’t think I could carry him on my back if he weighed 18 pounds.
